News: Universal Credit rolls-out across district

New Forest District Council is reminding residents of the government’s latest changes to benefits with the roll-out of Universal Credit (UC), the single monthly payment.

From 22 February 2017 Universal Credit will start to be rolled out for all working age claimants (not just single claimants) in Bartley, Bramshaw, Brook, Cadnam, Calmore, Copythorne, Lyndhurst, Minstead, Ower, Totton, and Winsor.

Universal Credit, introduced by the Department for Work and Pensions, is designed to support working age people who are on a low income or out of work. It is replacing six existing benefits and is currently being rolled out across the UK.

The new system is based on a single monthly payment, transferred directly into a bank account.

The payment will include rent (if liable) and individuals are responsible for making payments to their landlord.

Universal Credit merges income-based Jobseekers Allowance, income-related Employment and Support Allowance, Working Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, Income Support and Housing Benefit.
